Boiler Replacement

What is involved in changing to a combi boiler?

A combi boiler is a combination boiler. It is named this way as it combines both the hot water cylinder and the cold water tank into one unit and takes water straight from the main instead. As such upgrading to a combi boiler can be pretty straightforward.

There are then a few variables that need to be considered depending on the way your heating system is set up:

  • A new location may need to be used, requiring additional pipework. This will also require a new core hole to be drilled for the flue.
  • Heating Controls may need to be upgraded.
  • A limescale filter may be needed if you live in a hard water area.
  • Thermostatic Radiator Valves (TRVs) may need to be installed.

We also instal a MagnaClean unit to help filter out deposits and sludge, ensuring that your system will last longer and perform better.

How long does it take to replace a new boiler?

A new gas boiler replacement or upgrade will take between one to two working days. If there is just a straight boiler swap for a newer model with similar dimensions and fittings, then you can expect 1 day.

How does a gas boiler work?
Gas is supplied to your boiler from the gas meter that is generally installed on an external wall of the premises. A piezo ignition is used to ignite the gas and is controlled from the thermostat when you turn on your central heating system. The water inlet to the boiler generally comes from a cold water storage tank in the attic. The heat generated in the boiler is transferred to this water by use of a heat exchanger. As the water heats up it is then pumped through to the radiators and hot water cylinder tank. Check out our gas boiler replacement page for more information.
Will a gas boiler work without electricity?

No, without electricity the boiler will not be able to ignite the gas required to start heating the water.
